About Me - Jane Dunn & Cosy Cosies

Me and Fennec, my 18 year old dog (c1992-2010)Having lived and worked in the South of France for around a decade (mostly just north of Avignon), I finally realised how much I missed the changing Scottish climate (strange I know, but also true), and returned to the land of my birth in 1996. Soon after, I began a degree course at Edinburgh College of Art studying textile design. I graduated in 2003 and worked in a design studio in New York for a year, and then in London for more than 2 years. Not being a city girl, neither suited me very well and I am now living back in the pretty little highland village of Cromarty where I grew up.

I now share the fine old sandstone-built house that my parents bought 46 years ago when they started Cromarty Pottery, with my slightly (some would rudely say, very) portly British Blue cat Douglas. I also now have a lovely wee Jack Russell called Nellie to keep me company - photo coming soon, I promise.

Cosy Cosies - Douglas, my slightly portly British Blue catCromarty is a place that affords me none of the trappings of city life, but I am more than amply compensated by having a sea wall to drink my morning tea on with a fantastic view across the Cromarty Firth, and a profusion of wildlife to gaze at and enjoy. Moreover, thanks to the wonders of modern technology, I am able to work from home in the most picturesque and tranquil of surroundings.

I do make regular forays into the cities to look for fabrics and trimmings, of course, and am always especially pleased to get hold of vintage cloth in second-hand shops (such as the 'Cameo' fabric I’m currently using for iPhone and iPod Touch cosies). Some fabrics I buy new, some I have had squirrelled away for years having caught my eye at a French or London streetmarket. This does mean that the stock of some of the fabrics I am using at the moment is finite, and I will probably never find them again, so I have learned to make optimal use of every scrap. But don't worry, this just gives me the opportunity to look for more fabulous textiles - old and new - for future Cosy Cosies products.

Who invented the Tea Cosy?

One popular theory goes that an Irish farmer in reaching across the dinner table accidentally dropped his hat from his head onto the teapot. When he later removed the hat he found that the tea was still nice and hot. His wife then decided to knit a purpose-made tea 'hat' for the pot, and she called this hat a 'cosy'.
